Yesterday my baby turned 16.

In a roundabout way , his arrival is the reason I began farming.

In 2007, the year before he was born, I was deeply ensconced in a parallel universe - the bloodstock industry.

Working for the world’s leading thoroughbred company at its headquarters in Ireland. In a world I’d only dreamed of growing up as a grubby kid in Central West NSW.

As Media Director of the advertising and marketing arm, I was at the centre of worldwide ad campaigns, yearly brochures and the birth of the digital office.

Travelled the world to race meetings, buying ads and at one time having breakfast with Alex Ferguson at Man United whilst Becks and Ronaldo grazed at the table next to us.

All in a day’s work. Until it wasn’t.

Years before, I had advised my then boss PF, defiantly declaring I would be a career woman, no children for me thank you very much.

However, that was not to be.

I thrived with one babóg, continued with two, precariously managed with three and succumbed with four children. I couldn’t juggle all those balls at once.

At the time, almost impossible to digest.

Looking back, the best thing that ever happened to me… I wouldn’t change a thing.

I refocused as a mum.

Began a new life in Australia.

Discovered my own ad agency - evolve.

Learned about event management as the co-ordinator of the Hunter Valley’s Biggest Street Party, advertised the country’s largest country race meeting and sipped my way through three years marketing the award winning Two Rivers Wines amongst others.

After seven years down under, we packed our bags again and headed back to Ireland.

This time I wanted to farm. And that’s what I did.

Hens, pigs, cattle, sheep and the mad mischievous goats.

I wanted my children to understand where food really comes from. How it matters the way it is grown.

That farming can heal the planet - and us.

I hope I succeeded.

Happy Birthday Finn x

Reminder -my book Soil Sister, Farming for our Future is not just for kids. It explains, in simple terms, how regenerative farming works and how it can help heal ourselves and our planet.
